Friends Staff

Cheryl has spent her career in non-profit organizations, State Parks and the National Park Service. Cheryl oversees the Friends 501(c)(3) organization and the Natural Science Education Fund.
Veronica Frehm
Director of Education
Veronica, born in Hawaii and raised in West Palm Beach, has worked in the environmental education field for many years. As DOE Veronica leads the education programs in the Pew Family Natural Science Education Center.
Peggy Anderson
 Beach Outfitters & Gift Shop Mgr
A native Midwesterner, Peggy relocated to South Florida in 2010 and began volunteering at the Park soon after, joining the Gift Shop Staff in 2014. One of her favorite activities is nature photography, especially sea turtles and birds.

Park Staff

David Dearth, Park Manager
David began his career with the Florida Park Service in 1997, and has since held many positions, most recently as the Park Manager at Hugh Taylor Birch State Park. David brings with him a strong background in park facilities maintenance and management.

 Assistant Park Manager

Louise Candea, Administrative Assistant
Originally from Indiana, Louise moved to Florida in 1993, and joined the Florida Park Service in 2015. Louise enjoys working here in paradise, loves animals, her grandchildren and her husband, not necessarily in that order.
Art Carton, Park Services Specialist
Art has been at MacArthur Beach since 2004 when he moved from Ocala. Art oversees the Moonlight Over MacArthur and Bluegrass concerts, NatureScaping, and instructs for our Natural Science Education Program.
Chandler KeenanPark Services Specialist
Chandler is from the Tampa Bay area, a graduate of Duke University with a M.S. in Environmental Management. Chandler coordinates our Volunteers, oversees Animal Care and instructs our Natural Science Education Program.
Valerie Caruso, Park Ranger
Valerie was born in Italy and raised in Chicago IL. Since moving here in 2007 Valerie volunteered in all aspects Park activities before joining the staff in May of 2015.
Steve Steve Desy, Park Ranger
Steve was born in coastal Maine and worked in heavy equipment construction for forty years before moving to Florida in 2008. Steve served many volunteer hours before becoming a Park Ranger in October, 2008.
 Rob Matriscino, Park Ranger
Rob came to MacArthur in 2000, bringing skills in invasive/exotic plant removal, native plant ID and coastal geology. In his free time he enjoys surfing, and instructs the RECSkills Intro to Surfing course.
Sarah Waddell, Park Ranger
After completing a Park internship, Sarah’s knowledge, dedication and cheerfulness brought her onto our staff. Sarah was promoted to Park Ranger status in April of 2012.
